9 Ways You Give Your Power Away ~ The First Step in Reclaiming Power!
If you find yourself in a constant state of powerlessness, you definitely should read this article. When you don't recognize the power of your personal sovereignty and the power of choice, you will tend to give away your power without realizing it. Everyone has been at a point where they felt they were at the mercy of whatever life was doling out at the time. Life often hits hard and without warning. The key to maintaining power and control in your life is to minimize these moments of helplessness you feel.
Believe it or not, you have more control over your life than you realize. You must learn to protect your personal sovereignty and to use your power of choice effectively.
Following are nine ways you give away power.

1. You Fail to Speak Up When Something Is Wrong
Oftentimes, when people are faced with a situation that seems uncomfortable or difficult, they will choose to remain silent. This can be detrimental to your own personal power, as it fails to allow you to speak your truth and stand up for yourself. Taking the time to speak up, even in difficult situations, can help to reclaim your power. This is not as much about being confrontational as it is about being true to yourself and your interests.
2. You Wait On Someone To Give Your Permission to Take Action
When you wait for someone else to give you permission to take action, you essentially give away your power to decide and take action on your own. While it is wise to seek the counsel of those who have insight, you must be willing to exercise your personal power by taking the initiative to make decisions and take action on your own. When you do this, you reclaim your power and become more self-reliant.
3. You Procrastinate and Take No Action
Procrastination is another way people give away their power, as it prevents them from taking action and making decisions. I often say that procrastination is the thief of time and opportunity. Nothing robs you of time and destroys potential like sitting still and doing nothing. I would rather make the wrong choice and take action than do nothing. If I take action, at least I am moving and engaged in the process. I can always adjust to correct the error.
If you find yourself procrastinating, try to identify the underlying reasons for your procrastination and take steps to address them. This will help you to regain your power and take action when needed.
4. You Let Others Call the Shots In Your Life
It can be easy to let other people call the shots in your life, especially if you are in a situation where you feel like you don't have a choice. However, it is important to remember that you have the power to make your own decisions and take control of your life. For a great portion of my youth, I relished being a renegade---operating on my terms. While that can produce a feeling of empowerment, it is not what I want you to focus on here. Always operating on your own without consideration of the input of others can leave you unsheltered by accountability. Be willing to listen to the counsel of others but never obligate yourself to move against what you consider to be in your best interest. By taking the initiative to make your own decisions, you will reclaim your power and be more self-reliant.
5. You Ignore the Power of Your Own Intuition
Your intuition is a powerful tool that you can use to make decisions and take action. I often say ignoring your intuition is tantamount to ignoring God. I believe our tuition is a direct link to God. The problem is most people have convinced themselves that they are smarter than God and constantly override their intuition based on reason. When you ignore your intuition, you are essentially giving away your power to tap into the mind of God for divine insight. By taking the time to listen to your intuition and make decisions based on it, you can reclaim your power at an unimaginable level.
6. You Play Victim In Your Own Story
When you play the victim in your own story, you surrender your power to create the life you want. You cannot be a victim and a victor at the same time. Playing the victim places the focus of power on whatever you believe is victimizing you. When you decided that you are not a victim and that you have the ability to overcome any situation, you place yourself in a position of power. Taking the initiative to take ownership of your story and make decisions that will help you create a better life will help you to walk in tremendous power.
7. You Wait on Perfect Conditions
Waiting on perfect conditions to take action is another way to give away your power. Perfect conditions don't exist, and when you wait for them, you surrender your power to take action and make decisions. There are no perfect situations, no perfect timing, or perfect opportunities.
"The people who get on in this world are people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them." ~ Norman Vincent Peale
Taking action, even in imperfect conditions, will help you to reclaim your power. It is not the obstacle you face that matters but the attitude you take toward it. Your success will be determined by the attitude with which you face obstacles.
8. You Neglect Yourself to Please Others
When you prioritize pleasing others over caring for yourself, you relinquish your power. Taking the time to prioritize your own well-being and make decisions that will benefit you will help you to reclaim your power. Self-care is not a form of selfishness; it is the pentacle of self-empowerment. There is nothing wrong with being a considerate and caring person, but constantly prioritizing the well-being of others is a form of self-neglect. If you have a passion for helping others, remember that to be most effective, you must be at your best. So, self-care has to be a priority.
9. You Play Small
When you play small and fail to take risks, you reduce your power in this world. There is no power in playing small. There is little to be gained in pursuing dwarfed goals and colorless dreams. Taking risks and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will help you to reclaim your power and create the life you want. Be bold in your movements. You can be bold without being foolish; however, a foolish pursuit will at least get you out of your corner of comfort long enough to realize that going after something big will not kill you.
"If the vision you have for your life isn't so huge that it intimidates you, there's a good chance it is insulting God." ~ Steven Furtick
